About The Role
Working within a growing sales and technical team, the Sales Engineer / Technical Sales Manager will:
- Operate from my clients Tokyo office and travel to meet customers across Japan when required. (on average 4 customer visits per month)
- Attend approximately 2-3 exhibitions in Japan each year and support at exhibitions/events in Asia when needed (1-2 times per year).
- Complete initial product training at my clients’ European manufacturing site (first 2-3 weeks of employment).
- Consult with customers to understand their application needs and provide fit for purpose solutions.
- Take a lead role in supporting and identifying new (30%) and existing (70%) customers across Japan.
- Work with local colleagues to deliver the team sales objective for Japan.
- Sell in at R&D Engineer, Product Manager, and Director level.
- Work to a typical sales cycle from 3 weeks to 2 years.
- Develop relationships with a small portfolio of existing distributors (30%) and both new and existing OEMs (70%) within areas such as Metrology, Scientific, Imaging and Inspection Instruments.
- Manage and support existing distribution partners, which will include attending joint visits with them to potential customers.
- Conduct both virtual and face-to-face client meetings.
About You
Although product training is provided, the successful candidate MUST possess an engineering mindset and hold a minimum of 2 years within a technical sales position in the Japanese market.
To be considered, you should have experience selling instruments to end users or components to OEMs and be comfortable consulting with potential clients on design.
Previous experience selling metrology, instrumentation, laser technology, non-contact measurement, optical imaging, microscopy, optics, lenses, electronics, photonics, spectroscopy, nanotechnology, sensors, motion control, robotics, automation or affiliated would be highly beneficial.
Advanced level English and Japanese are essential, as is a degree level education within an engineering or scientific (physics) discipline.
Other key requirements include:
- Hunger to proactively grow business and new relationships.
- Excellent communication skills with the ability to discuss highly technical solutions in a meaningful manner.
- The ability to build trusting relationships with clients.
- Willingness to learn and develop.
- Driving license.
- Rights to work in Japan (my client doesn’t offer sponsorship).
