Service Engineer | Case Study

The Brief

We were engaged by a supplier of industrial generators and backup power systems to recruit a Service Engineer for the DACH region. The company had previously relied on internal referrals to meet its recruitment needs, but this approach was no longer producing the calibre of candidates required. The challenge was to find someone with a strong combination of mechanical and electrical servicing expertise, able to handle the complex technical demands of both installation and ongoing maintenance. This role was critical for supporting a growing customer base, with projects spread across Germany, Austria, and Switzerland, where timely, expert service was essential to maintaining operational reliability.

The Process

We collaborated closely with the Service Manager to gain complete clarity on the technical and logistical requirements of the role. The ideal candidate needed proven experience with generator installation, fault-finding, preventative maintenance, and load testing, along with the flexibility to travel extensively throughout the DACH region at short notice. In addition, knowledge of synchronisation systems, diesel gensets, and site commissioning was a priority to ensure they could step into customer projects without a steep learning curve.

Our search strategy involved mapping the talent pool across generator OEMs, specialist field service companies, and industrial plant maintenance teams. We carried out targeted headhunting to engage both active and passive candidates, leveraging industry networks and sector-specific contacts to reach professionals who were unlikely to respond to standard job advertisements. Each candidate underwent a detailed competency interview where we assessed technical proficiency, fault-resolution skills, adaptability to different work environments, and their ability to work independently on customer sites across multiple countries.

Within the agreed timeframe, we presented a shortlist of highly capable engineers, each accompanied by detailed profiles outlining technical expertise, travel flexibility, and relevant project experience.

The Result

The client appointed an experienced Service Engineer with extensive generator knowledge and a proven track record in delivering multi-country field service assignments. The individual’s expertise in synchronisation systems and commissioning, coupled with their hands-on approach and customer focus, allowed them to integrate quickly and add value from their first project. The recruitment process, from initial briefing to offer acceptance, was completed in four weeks, ensuring minimal disruption to ongoing service schedules and safeguarding customer satisfaction.

What the Client had to Say

“Mase found us a highly skilled engineer who ticked every box — and they did it in a professional and timely manner. The quality of candidates stood out.”
